Guerin Inc. was established in 1999 to construct facilities for a Providence House for Children campus at Georgetown, Indiana. A program of Providence Self Sufficiency Ministries Inc. (PSSM), Providence House provides shelter and round-the-clock care in a group home setting for abused and/or neglected children, and case management and counseling for families reuniting with children in foster care and families in danger of separation because they are homeless or live in hazardous, substandard housing.
In April 2005, Guerin Inc. opened Guerin Woods, a development for elder citizens that adjoins the Providence House campus. Today, Guerin Woods includes 22 two-bedroom apartments for individuals and couples age 62 and older; a senior citizens center open to all seniors in Floyd and surrounding counties; and The Villas of Guerin Woods, two 10-unit “small house” dwellings that provide assisted living and skilled nursing care for frail elders age 62 and older. Guerin Inc. currently is building a third villa with expected occupancy in April, and a fourth villa is projected to be available for occupancy in August 2010.
In 2008-09, Guerin Inc. built The Meadows of Guerin, Inc., a HUD 202 grant funded development consisting of 24 one-bedroom apartments, a community center, and a two-bedroom apartment for the live-in manager. Serving people age 62 and older, The Meadows is adjacent to Guerin Woods. The Meadows opened in April.
History
PSSM, an incorporated ministry of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, was established in August 1994 in New Albany, Indiana, to provide educational and family services to people in need. Providence House, the first group home for foster children in the area, began in 1994 when two Sisters of Providence ministering with PSSM were state licensed as foster parents. The original Providence house was located in a former convent in New Albany.
In 1998, PSSM approached the Archdiocese of Indianapolis about the possibility of purchasing 12-plus acres of land at Georgetown as the location for a campus for Providence House for Children. The archdiocese recognized the need for expanded facilities for foster care and offered the land for a $1 fee. Because Sisters of Providence do not own land away from the motherhouse at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Guerin Inc. was formed to serve as the corporation responsible for the land and for developing it.
Guerin Inc. developments are funded by grants and donations.
Heritage
Guerin Inc. honors Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, who journeyed from France to the wilderness of Indiana in 1840 to establish the Sisters of Providence congregation at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Mother Theodore was named a “Saint” during a canonization ceremony October 15, 2006, at the Vatican. The Family Reunification and Preservation Program duplex on the Providence House campus is known as “Guerin House.” Guerin Woods was named in recognition of Saint Mother Theodore and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
People of all races and religions are welcome to participate in programs at Providence House for Children and Guerin Woods.
